Familiar Chaos — Terms of Use
Last updated: May 17, 2026
By using Familiar Chaos, you agree to these terms. They're written in plain English on purpose.
What Familiar Chaos Is
Familiar Chaos is a party game for family and friends. The host opens a room from one device; players join from their phones using a 4-character anonymous join code. The game deals prompts, questions, and gentle mini-challenges for the room to play together.
It's a prompt engine — what you and your group do with the prompts is up to you. Skip any card, any time, for any reason.
Who It's For
Familiar Chaos is designed for general audiences. The content is built for groups of friends, families across generations, and roommates. Players should be at least 13 years old to use the service without a parent or guardian. If you're under 13, please ask a parent or guardian to set up the room for you.
Hosts are responsible for choosing prompts that fit their group. Every card can be skipped, and every player can pass on any prompt without explaining why.
Open Beta
Familiar Chaos is currently in open beta. That means:
- Things will break.
- Cards will occasionally glitch.
- We'll fix issues as we find them — and as you report them.
Use of the game during beta is at your own risk. Don't rely on it for anything mission-critical (it's a party game; please don't).
Privacy & How We Handle Your Stuff
We protect your data with everything we've got, but no system on the internet is unbreakable. Assume nothing online is fully private and use Familiar Chaos accordingly.
We collect the minimum we need to run the game (room codes, display names, scores, optional avatars, and any submissions players make during play). We don't sell personal data.
Party submissions. Photos, voice notes, and typed answers you submit during a party are visible to everyone in that room. If your host compiles a room album at the end of the game, those submissions are stored so the album can be shared with the players and revisited later. Album image links are signed and refresh on every page load.
Weekly Catch-Up. If you use the family newsletter product, the photos, voice notes, and replies family members submit are stored so they can be compiled into newsletters and archived for your family. Each issue gets a permanent share link with an unguessable slug; we don't publish them or index them in search.
Audio cleanup. Raw audio recordings that aren't tied to an active album or newsletter are deleted on a regular schedule.
Your rights. You can request a copy of your data or ask us to delete it by emailing hello@familiarchaos.app. We'll respond within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA, or similar laws — we honor those requests the same way.
Built For Everyone
Familiar Chaos was designed for accessible, low-pressure group play. The founders are neurodivergent and built the experience around clear pacing, easy opt-outs, and zero pile-ons. You can pass on anything without explaining why.
Community Submissions
If you submit content to Familiar Chaos, you affirm:
- It's yours to submit, or you have permission to share it.
- It doesn't target a specific person without their okay.
- It's appropriate for a general-audience party game — no hate speech, harassment, sexually explicit material, or content that would be inappropriate for a family audience.
- It doesn't include identifying information about minors without their parent or guardian's consent.
We may remove submissions at our discretion to keep the game welcoming. Repeated violations may end your access.
Things You Cannot Do
You may not use Familiar Chaos to:
- Harass, bully, dox, or threaten anyone.
- Share illegal content of any kind.
- Share sexually explicit material, or any content sexualizing a minor in any way.
- Reverse engineer, scrape, or abuse the platform's infrastructure.
- Impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation with us.
Limitation of Liability
Familiar Chaos, its founders, employees, contractors, and partners are not liable for any damages arising out of your use of the game — including emotional, social, financial, or any other consequences of choices you and your group make while playing.
You are responsible for your own choices, your own boundaries, and your own wellbeing. The game is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Familiar Chaos, its founders, employees, contractors, and partners from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the game or your violation of these terms.
Account Termination
We may suspend or terminate access at any time, with or without notice, if we believe you're violating these terms or causing harm to other players.
Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms as the platform evolves. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated version. We'll bump the "Last updated" date at the top whenever we change anything meaningful.
